It’s time to start talking about a general strike

Last week, Rosmery Alvarado—a Pittsburg mother of four—was arrested by ICE during what should have been a routine green card interview in Kansas City. Today, heartbreakingly, reports indicate she is being held in Louisiana, possibly ahead of deportation to Guatemala.

Rosmery wasn’t hiding. She was following the legal process, seeking permanent residency as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. She brought documents, family photos, and hope. She paid for attorneys. Instead, she was handcuffed, taken to a detention center, and cut off from the life she built here in Kansas.

Many of us wanted to act—loudly. But out of respect for the family’s wishes and their fear of retaliation, we held back. Sadly, this isn’t the first time families have been silenced by fear—and it won’t be the last if we don’t find a way to stand together.

We all know Martin Niemöller’s warning about how this story ends:

"Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

The question before us now isn’t just how we support Rosmery’s family—it’s how we, as a community, respond to the rise of tyrrany. How do we protect our neighbors when legal processes become traps? When fear keeps good people quiet? When those in power stop listening?

Is It Time to Talk About a General Strike?

No one’s saying we call for one tomorrow. But we do need to start asking hard questions:

What do we do when protests, newspaper articles and following the rules aren’t enough?
How do we show solidarity in a way that can’t be ignored?
Are we prepared, if necessary, to use the most powerful tool ordinary people have—the withdrawal of our labor and compliance?

History shows us that general strikes—when communities unite to halt "business as usual"—have forced change where nothing else could:

In 1919 Seattle, tens of thousands shut down a city to demand dignity for workers.
In 1980s Poland, strikes helped topple authoritarian rule.
In Puerto Rico (2019), mass protests and strikes led to a corrupt governor’s resignation.

These weren’t spontaneous uprisings. They were the result of conversations—of people realizing that together, they held more power than they’d been led to believe. And they were the result of meticulous planning. Mass actions don’t form without planning.

What Would Starting This Conversation Look Like?

We’re not calling for immediate action—we’re calling for awareness, dialogue, and preparation:

Community Discussions:
We need safe spaces to talk openly about civil resistance—what it is, how it works, and when it’s justified. Our labor brothers and sisters are experts in leveraging the power of ordinary people working together. I suggest we ask them to start teaching us.
Building Coalitions:
A successful general strike will require unity across political, economic, and social lines. That starts with reaching out—to labor groups, faith communities, immigrant advocates, small businesses, students, and anyone who believes in justice. It starts with establishing networks of mutual aid and community, even with, and this is important, people whom we might not otherwise agree.
Understanding the Risks—and the Rewards:
Strikes come with challenges. But silence comes with greater ones. The more we understand, the better prepared we are if the day comes when action is necessary.
Identifying Clear Goals:
This isn’t about disruption for its own sake. It’s about defending our neighbors and safeguarding our entire way of life.

A Call for Courageous Conversations

The Crawford County Democrats aren’t declaring a strike. We’re saying it’s time to stop whispering about what’s happening—and start planning how we respond if things get worse. Because they are getting worse.

If we believe in community, in justice, and in the fundamental rights of every person to live without fear, then we can’t afford to ignore the tools history has given us.

Let’s start the conversation before we lose the right to speak.

Party ‘gatherings’ start May 20

When a group of us had a meeting to discuss the success of Pie Day, one of the fun aspects of that day was the opportunity to have the time for a social gathering. Thus we decided to have a consistent monthly time to have no business, no fundraising, just purely social with the aim of becoming acquainted with members we do not know or better acquainted with those we know.

So, to that end we will schedule monthly gatherings at HQ the third Tuesday of every month. To accommodate as many people as possible there will be a gathering in the morning, 9am to 11am and another at 5pm to 7pm. (The date and time could change as we evolve…). These gatherings may also be a good opportunity to invite friends new to Crawford County Democrats and may not be comfortable attending a business meeting.

As usual when people gather, food is always welcome. Everyone is invited to bring snacks but it certainly is not required. Mark your calendars for May 20 and plan to attend one of the gatherings. If you have questions please feel free to contact me at janicearthur226@gmail.com

Report from the DNC

We had the honor at the Crawford County Democrats’ monthly meeting on April 13 to hear from Hank Chamberlain, a DNC Committeeman from Kansas City. My biggest take from his talk was that the Democratic Party needs to ensure that our messaging is appropriate for the specific audience that is being addressed. While we are sympathetic to many causes, our audiences in Kansas have pressing concerns, such as their local schools, hospitals, the postal service and water rights. To address these issues, the Party could hire experts at developing messaging that fits the needs and interests of voters. We should take care to be sure these individuals have the knowledge and ability to deliver clearly what our audience wants and needs to hear about their concerns and issues. The messages must concentrate on rights and recourses. By following Mr. Chamberlain’s suggestions, the Democratic Party may be able to engage those who want to stay involved with the Democratic Party and perhaps retain those who have left. Better yet, maybe we can encourage others to understand and find the values and messages to be congruent with their concerns.

From comments to the Pittsburg “Hands Off” protest on April 5

During the 2024 election campaign, a Republican member of the House of Representatives was asked about his vision of the United States. He responded with the following: “We want to take the United States back to what it was in 1960.” I wondered what aspect of 1960 he was talking about. How was government different, or society?

1960 was certainly a different era, and on the surface, it seemed a simpler, more innocent age. Some of the most popular TV shows of this period were “Father Knows Best,” “I love Lucy” and “Leave it to Beaver.” I suspect that there were other aspects of this world that this Republican Representative would likely support. For example, in 1960 abortion was illegal in every state in the country.

What other differences were there in 1960?

Interracial marriages were illegal in 16 states prior to the 1967 Supreme Court ruling, Loving v Virginia. What do we say about those laws that prohibited interracial marriages? We say, “Hands Off.”

Gay marriage was illegal in every state in the country in 1960, and such bans were only lifted with the 2015 Supreme Court ruling, Obergefell v. Hodges. What do we say about those laws that prohibited gay marriages? We say, “Hands Off.”

As a result of poll taxes and literacy tests, the right of Blacks to vote was illegal in most of the South, until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. What do we say about those laws that limit voting rights? We say, “Hands Off.”

Regarding abortion, we say, “Hands Off.”

I have no idea whether this Republican Congressman would want to go back to the “Make America Great” days of poll taxes, and bans on interracial or gay marriages, but there is one aspect of “the good old days” of 1960 that I would certainly support: The marginal tax rate on those making more than $400,000 was 91%. THAT’S RIGHT, 91%, in contrast to the current rate of 37%. Today, raising the tax rate of the rich to 91% would raise about $700 billion a year, producing a far greater reduction in the federal deficit than Elon Musk has dreamed of in cutting Head Start, the Department of Education or Social Security.

From the beginning of our history, the United States has suffered with tragic inequalities. While I hate to sound woke, I feel an obligation to remind people that while the founding fathers wrote eloquently about “all men are created equal,” many of them owned slaves. And that “all men” did not include women. That the vast majority of women could not vote until the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920. That not a single Catholic candidate for a major party was nominated for president until 1928, and the first Catholic was not elected until 1960. That we still have not elected a woman to be president!

Despite this, if we look at a larger historical perspective, we must not forget the strides we have made since 1960 with civil rights, with a woman’s right to control her own body, with gay people to express their love to each other and the world as they choose.

Which brings me back to the 1960s. On March 25, 1965, Martin Luther King was asked how long it would take for us to achieve justice. His response was, “How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

On this day, almost exactly 60 years since Martin Luther King spoke these eloquent words, we are gathered to honor his promise. Before the Civil War, it was the abolitionists, such as Harriett Tubman and Frederick Douglass. The Suffragette Movement was led by women such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton. With Civil Rights, it was Martin Luther King, John Lewis and Shirley Chisholm. We stand on your shoulders to achieve justice.

This is officially the largest crowd that's ever shown up for an unemployed person. It’s been three months since I left a White House appointment at USDA Rural Development. I was not one of those federal employees who got a surprise request for resignation. I knew it was coming as soon as the election happened. It's still tough, though.

As many of you know, if you've read any of the pieces that I've written in Kansas Reflector or elsewhere, we rebuilt what the first Trump Administration dismantled in the federal government. And now we’re watching them dismantle it again.

I want to share some things from the federal perspective. Like most of you, all of you, I have faced some challenges in my life, even greater than standing out in the cold today.

I grew up on a dairy farm that went under during the 1980s farm crisis. Lots of times we didn't have electricity. We might not have water; we might not have telephone. That's how I grew up. I've lost dear family members who fought for freedom, workers’ rights and social justice. I'm a fifth generation Kansan (so I'm also a “real” Kansan). Anybody read the 1860 Republican Party platform? It makes a lot of sense. Those are my people; they came here to fight for abolition and women's rights and all the things that are good.

I have survived twenty-nine years of marriage, 36 hours of childbirth, (and if you're curious, yes, that was just one kid), and a double mastectomy. I like to tell people all the time that after all of that and standing here in the cold today, nothing scares me.

But I don't blame people for being scared right now. We just learned that the stock market has lost $6 trillion in value in just two days, and we're all facing a tariff tax estimated at more than $4,000 per American family per year. That may not be a lot of money for some people; but that's a lot of money to me. Here's something to think about. If you are one of the unlucky people who is working for $7.25 minimum wage right now. If you're making minimum wage right now, that means you'll have to work 552 extra hours every year. That's 14 weeks at 40 hours a week just to cover that tariff tax. And this doesn't even consider the taxes Americans are already paying for a government that's been redesigned to fail those who need it most.

Of course, there are some who think that honest American taxpayers are suckers. Tesla says it doesn't owe any taxes on last year's $2.3 billion in earnings. Our president brags that he's too smart to pay taxes. When Trump first said this, he said he was a better steward of money than the government. And they're the ones who say Social Security is a Ponzi scheme?

Over the past 75 days, we've all seen how that's turned out. The only people feeling liberated on Liberation Day are the emperors who have no clothes. When the stock market crashes, billionaires think differently than the rest of us. In their words, this is a “great time to be rich.” Regardless of what happens right now, they're bargain hunting on the back of working people. They are out buying stocks because they know they can get some bargains. While the stock market hits the skids, they hit the golf course. Many of us, fortunately, do not aspire to be billionaires. We’d settle for clean water, public education, fair wages and equal opportunities for everyone in our communities.

While the great negotiator gives away the farm, many politicians have abdicated their role to check the power of the executive branch. And this is what we're seeing with Congress. One of them has decided he doesn’t have to listen to anyone he labels as “not a real Kansan.”

When you're an elected official, you represent the people in the area you serve. You don't just represent the people who agree with the Trump Administration’s devastating policies. These guys stand by and watch as the executive branch destroys the very programs that they created and funded. Congress holds the purse strings; they appropriate funds for programs their constituents say are important. And they're rolling over. Families lose and billionaires win.

I've got news for those who are who are using fear to intimidate us, Kansans don't run scared. We're not divided when we unite against those who seek to divide us. We might be afraid, but we always channel that fear into action. Failure is not an option. That's my personal definition of ad astra per aspera. Failure is not an option; and we will work our “per asperas” off to make sure we don’t fail. Here in Kansas, we use fear to drive us to fix things. Don't forget, they're the ones who are scared. They're afraid of an educated public. They're afraid of free press. They're afraid that we will no longer be divided. And that we will unite to hold their power to account.

Today, we’re no longer divided. Today’s the day we demand checks and balances. We unite to hold our leaders to account. We stand up and say “Hands Off” our Education, our Social Security, our Medicare and Medicaid. Today's the day that we make our voices speak louder than the dark money that has scared our representatives from representing the US. Now is the time to choose leaders for their ideals not their deals.

Today, we're showing the world we will not sit idly by and watch the corporate takeover of the American Dream. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And I know that a number of these speakers have brought this up, but I can't stress enough how important it is for you to be engaged. If you don't want to run for office, that’s fine. Help someone who does. We’re going to have to work hard to rebuild what was taken. It’s easy to tear things down. It's hard to build things, and it's going to take a lot of time to recover from the damage that's been done. Thank you all for inviting me here. Thank you for showing up. Continue to support your friends and neighbors and those who are/were federal employees.

I encourage you to be a leader in your community, or support someone else who's leading as well - because today, we show the world that

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” (FDR).

Lessons from Sen. Booker’s 25+ hours Senate speech

On April 1, 2025 Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25+ hours On April 1, 2025 Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25+hours on the Senate floor and broke the record filibuster set by Strom Thurmond in 1957 when he sought to prevent the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

In the late 1960’s when I was in college, I participated in protesting the Vietnam war and in the early 1970’s I rallied for women’s rights and reproductive freedom. Although those issues were very important to me then, I did not wake up every morning with fear, horror, and angst like I do now when reading and hearing about the deportations of innocent people, the constitutional crisis in our country, and the atrocities happening around the world. Senator Cory Booker said, “I am scared too, but fear is a necessary precursor to courage” when he spoke for 25+ hours on the Senate floor.

Shannon Martin, from the league of women voters, distilled “seven core, true, inspiring, and real lessons” from Senator Booker’s speech on the Senate floor in what he called our moral moment. The seven core lessons are these:

We are all capable of acting with moral courage and that our fears will light the way for our own moral courage. To resist tyranny, we must not obey in advance. We must hold true to our morals, values, and the guiding constitution.
Small things are never small, they build, they bloom. These are an emblem of courage and conscience for others. We all have a part in protecting our rights and each other. No action is too small or insignificant.
Spiritual obedience is not defined by a “narrow metric of rules.” Faith is shown through actions and care for others rather than rigid adherence to biases and prejudices.
Be a stayer. We can share our energy, courage, and integrity with others and our community when they need us the most. Stay with our commitments to each other and also allow some time to restore and find joy.
We must face the whole truth. We can rebuild from the sturdy center of the unvarnished truth, not a white-washed history. We learn from the mistaken and harmful actions of our past to build upon our dreams for an equitable present and future.
Community carries us. Our friends, family, colleagues, classmates, groups, neighbors, can sustain us through compassion, care, and truth.
Empathy is our superpower. Some rail against empathy, saying it is weak, because they are terrified of its power. It is an honor to stand with one another, to be fully human, and to hold tightly to what is good. Our empathy is our superpower in repairing and rebuilding our world.

Senator Booker reminded us that

“John Lewis would say something, John Lewis would do something. He would not treat this moral moment like it was normal ...This is our moral moment.”

Liberal Ladies update

Liberal Ladies Who Learn (about aging) met Wednesday, April 2, at 1:30 at Dem HQ. Penny brought her Chair Yoga video. After finishing those we did my 5 Minute Tai Chi. I hope I didn't ruin the calm by yelling "kegels" and "breathe in despair, breathe out hope and courage." You had to be there. We traded stories of treatment and successful outcomes.

Janice came in to give me her wonderfully detailed notes on the after meeting about Pi Day. Sandy let us know she sent $45 to White Stork for medical kits for front line Ukrainian soldiers -- money she made by making unique Ukraine beaded bracelets. Good job, Sandy.

Liberal Ladies met again April 9, at noon, at Dem HQ. I showed the soft neck support pillows made by a friend of Cheryle Wilson. She made them specifically for Lillian and Nancy. Both are doing well in their recoveries.

Harriet told us about Barack Obama's decision to start speaking out. He and Michelle are in marriage counseling. Penny called Moran's office and asked what he is doing to stop the tariffs and was told Moran has joined 11 other republicans who oppose some of the tariffs. Delma read her rant/rhyme that she read at the “Hands Off” rally. She has the knack of expressing the moment. We discussed the SAVE Act and other ways of decreasing the vote. Penny asked about the SAVE act. It has not passed and is sitting in the House. It would require a birth certificate or passport. A married woman would require a marriage certificate. Emily announced Ruth's campaign to run for School Board. She is still in the thinking/planning stage. She "doesn't want to lose our good schools." The news was met with resounding support. Nancy Tomassi reported that Joe Kennedy will not run. Penny asked about the homeless. She hasn't seen many lately. Others said there are camps if you know where to look.

Robert Gagnon came near the end of the meeting to explain his committee on Mutual Aid. He will work with us to find resources for those in need. Rexine told about her church, St. Peter's Episcopal, which has been doing a free breakfast on Tuesday mornings. Now they just do deliveries. Maybe the young Democrats would be interested in helping with deliveries. He described working with community gardens. His email is thomasmdgagnon@gmail.com. Contact him with your ideas and questions. Janice reported on Earth Day, 4/19 at the Farmer's Market. Harriet and Jim will donate rich dirt so kids (and adults who have an interest) can plant seeds to grow at home.

Emily told about a rally on 4/22 in Emporia where she will be a speaker. Also on 4/22 will be a gathering at HQ from 9 to 11 and 5 to 7. Janice will have more details. She'll need snack foods.

Liberal Ladies met again April 23 at noon, at HQ. Nancy Fredette was back for the first time since her recent surgery. She is still full of vim and viger!⁰ This woman doesn't let anything get her down. She told us the cards we sent meant a great deal to her. Nancy Tomassi brought a birthday card for Harriet's birthday for all to sign. We sang Happy Birthday to her. We had a new person, Karen Peternel. LL was explained to her and we went around the circle (to the left) to introduce ourselves. Karen found us on Facebook. She helped Janice at the Farmer's Market and has attended rallys!

Janice reported that Dems can have a table at the Farmer's Market for free as long as we don't sell anything. A list was passed around for volunteers to sign. Nancy Fredette suggested a bowl of wrapped candies to entice people to our table. We can do voter registrations there!

Janice directed attention to the half-page article about LL on the bulletin board. Nancy Tomassi had suggested we support Char Strong's class at the SEK LearnIng Center in Girard. They needed art supplies and, as usual, LL's came through. We got a sweet, creative, artistic thank you from the students and teachers. It is pinned next to the article.

Janice explained the newly launched social gatherings at HQ. It's an opportunity to get to know each other better. Food/snacks are welcome, but not required.

Toni Spieth spoke about Covid vaccine boosters. Kay Long said they are available at Walmart. It is suggested we get them every 6 months. Toni knows of 37 reported cases of measles in Kansas. Most of us should be immune, but check with your doctor. There is a also a vaccine for whooping cough.

Lynn Grant has been in contact with Safehouse about womens’ needs. We will donate hygiene and beauty products as well as soft blankets and gift cards for Mother's Day. We also decided to send a lunch for Mother's Day. $105 was donated. Sally Harryman will help with contents of the lunch. We can bring products to HQ starting on May 7.

Harriet described the Town Hall in Emporia. Moran, Marshall and Schmidt were invited but did not show. There were good speakers including Emily Walters and Jeanna Repass. Matt Kleinmann was there. There was a large group of Dems and Reps.

Jean Hurlbert mentioned Lisa Murkowski talking about the fear she and other Senators and Reps feel about crossing Trump. Jean suggested we write letters of support to her. Jean also asked if there is a rally/protest planned for this weekend. She plans to come to HQ with her TRUTH sign for her own rally. I am thinking I will join her with my Scream poster that says ENOUGH(!!!!!). Join us.

June 6th will be a national rally to support our troops.

Lillian sent an article about changes to Social Security. Bob Tomassi looked it over and thinks it only applies to first time applicants. Kay has been following this closely and she agrees.

Headquarters is good! With nearly 20 scheduled meetings in April and the alarm going off last week, it's proven to be a useful and safe place. As it stands recurring monthly meetings are:

Liberal Ladies Every other Wednesday, 12pm (will meet 5/7/25)

The busier we get the need for organization and communication increases. Smaller meetings are encouraged to be scheduled during normal business hours. As people feel more comfortable with their roles and community involvement increases the bulletin board has definitely come in handy. Upcoming meetings and events, committee information and other ways to become active are posted in plain sight.

A new team for the Young Dems

The Crawford County Young Democrats are excited to announce that we just wrapped up our executive team elections! Heading up the organization as our new president will be Sophia Stapleton, vice president Isaiah Harris, secretary Elisabeth Peters, and last but certainly not least, Blaise Jacks will be reprising his role as treasurer! We would like to extend the biggest thank you and farewell to Grace Garrett, who led the Young Dems and will now pursue her next chapter in life at Washburn University School of Law (good luck!!) We will be continuing our previous successes in coordinating with the county party as well as building on our new initiatives. Speaking of, we are currently occupying a volunteer spot every 3rd and 4th Sunday at the Wesley House, with ambitions to have a presence there every Sunday. Additionally, we are hosting an art sale fundraiser for Pittsburg Pride in order to assist in building their coffers to throw the annual Pride Fest!! The fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 10 from 11am to 4pm at our Headquarters, 217A North Broadway in Pittsburg. Next up for Book Club

May Book Club meets on Wednesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Democratic Headquarters.

During the April book group meeting, our discussion of Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian McLaren inevitably led to us sharing a range of emotions and perceptions about the current administration’s actions defying the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution and the moral imperatives we face. Thus, we decided to take a break from this reality and to explore a different genre of books.

So, instead of selecting a book for May, we picked the best-selling author, William Kent Krueger who is the New York Times bestselling author of acclaimed books (below) in the Cork O’Connor mystery series. Because it is a challenge to single out one of Krueger’s several books for our May book group, you may select one of his books you would like to read. Each of us will have an opportunity to discuss, compare, recommend or pan the book you selected for the meeting.

Whether you read a book or not, all are welcome to join for fun discussion and tasty potluck.

Article submissions are needed from Crawford County Democrats and friends about issues and topics we should all be thinking about. Let us publish your thoughts in this Revue, for distribution to county Democrats and others across the state.
