On Saturday, March 28, more than 400 proud patriots gathered in Pittsburg, Kansas, to loudly proclaim: “No Kings.” It was a beautiful, if slightly chilly, spring afternoon where the air still bites a little, but the energy of the crowd keeps you warm. People showed up from across the region, ready to stand together and make their voices heard.

The rally featured several guest speakers, each bringing their own perspective and passion. Afterward, we took to Broadway, marching together as a large, enthusiastic crowd. Drivers honked in support, people waved, and the message spread far beyond those walking side by side. Everyone could feel the winds of change.

When I was asked to speak at No Kings 3.0, I felt both honored and a bit nervous. Public speaking isn’t something I’m formally trained in. I usually rely on speaking off the cuff, trusting the moment to guide me. But I knew this day mattered too much to leave it to chance. That realization brought a different kind of pressure. Writing down my words.

I arrived early and spent nearly an hour going over my speech, making small adjustments, and trying to calm my nerves. Watching the crowd grow during that time was both inspiring and grounding. It reminded me of why I was there in the first place.

Then my name was called.

For a brief second, everything slowed down, but instead of panic, there was clarity. I stepped up, looked out at the crowd, and felt completely at ease. The energy from the people in front of me was incredible. When we moved into the “We the People” call and response, the crowd didn’t hesitate for a second. They met it with strength and unity. It was one of those moments you don’t forget.

Midway through the rally, a large group from Cherokee County arrived, adding even more energy and boosting the already strong turnout. Their presence was felt immediately, and it reinforced something important: this wasn’t just a small, local gathering. People were willing to travel, to show up, and to be counted.

The response from the broader public was mostly positive. There were waves, honks, and words of encouragement. Of course, not everyone agreed—there were only a few one-finger salutes—but even that felt minimal compared to the overall support. In a way, it highlighted just how much the mood is shifting.

Some people will try to deflect with “what about this” or “what about that,” as they always do. But that misses the bigger picture. What’s happening right now is that people are paying attention. They’re engaged, they’re frustrated, and they’re no longer content to sit quietly on the sidelines.

Saturday wasn’t the final test—not even close. It wasn’t meant to be. It was more like a preseason game: a chance to organize, to build confidence, and to remind people of the power they have when they stand together. If anything, it showed that this movement has momentum, and that momentum is only going to grow as we head toward the election in November 2026.

County Commissioners currently hold their meetings every Tuesday and Friday from 10:00 AM until they are done. There are several times each year that a regular Tuesday or Friday meeting is cancelled, such as for a holiday. They often schedule work sessions starting at 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM to review bills or to discuss issues with department heads. The commissioners are not permitted to take any binding action during work sessions. Binding action can only be taken during their meetings that are open to the public and scheduled ahead of time. Current Annual Pay is approximately $46,300 per year and they receive health ins. and retirement benefits. They also have expenses paid for trips on the county's behalf and are reimbursed for mileage. The other elected officials are in charge of their offices, but must have their budget approved by commissioners. The county commissioners exercise direct control over the following county departments:

• Road & Bridge Department (Each commissioner has their own personnel that work in their district)

• Appraiser's Office

• County Health Dept.

• Ambulance Dept.

• ‍Zoning Office - Zoning Officer, County Sanitation Officer and expenses for Zoning Board. Geographic Information Services (GIS or mapping and addressing)

• ‍Information Technology for updating and maintenance of computer network.

• ‍County Coroner's pay and other expenses for autopsies.

• ‍Maintenance for all county buildings including both courthouses, health dept., ambulance, etc.

• ‍Convention and Visitor's Bureau - Director and expenses funded by guest tax on hotel rooms.

• Crawford County Mental Health Dept. - provide part of the funding for it's operations and additional funds come from grants for services and billing individuals and insurance for some services. One commissioner serves on the board of directors and attends their meetings.

The weekend of March 6th to 8th some of the Crawford County Young Democrats attended the annual Washington Days hosted by the Kansas Democratic Party. It was quite different this year in terms of scheduling, as our Kansas Young Democrats meeting was on Friday night and we were not very prepared. During the meeting I felt proud of our Young Democrats, hearing the progress that’s been made, and plans to donate to young people running for office in Kansas. We also enjoyed a karaoke night not long after, run by Jae of the JoCo Young Democrats. Things are looking good for the Young Democrats right now, and it’s very motivating.

The next day Sophia, Jack, Shan and I had attended meetings for LGBTQ, CD2, and the KDP. We were reminded of all that’s at stake in our state regarding the new bill that affects trans people all over Kansas, but there’s a sense of hope hearing from all the candidates running for office in several districts and in federal office.

We then all attended the luncheon and banquet, where we got to hear Governor Laura Kelly’s last time speaking as Governor at Washington Days. We also heard from the Vice Chair of the DNC Artie Blanco, giving us the energy we need for this year’s midterm election. The speakers at both the luncheon and banquet were energetic, humorous, and honest regarding the direction we’re headed as a country.

Washington Days reminded me this year how grateful I am to be surrounded by people who want to work hard and get things done here in Crawford County and Kansas as a whole. There could be no better crowd.

Saturday, March 14th was our annual Pi (Pie) Day fundraiser, and it was another saccharine success! In total, we sold several dozen pies and raised just over 1200 dollars!! We opened our doors around 8am and had a steady stream of pie-purchasing patrons visit us until we wrapped up around 4. Many individuals stayed for a while enjoying free coffee and friendly camaraderie; people seemed to leave content in both heart and stomach!

We had a wide variety of pies for sale throughout the day, ranging from traditional apple and cherry, a Boston “Green” Pie, strawberry chiffon, fruit tart, to a (surprisingly - no offense) good vinegar pie! We sold almost all of our pies day-of and finished off the sale the next day during our county party meeting.

On behalf of the fundraising committee, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the volunteers that made pies as well as those who helped with set-up, worked during the event, and cleaned up afterwards. A special round of applause is due for Sally Harryman, our lovely headquarters manager, as well as the Liberal Ladies, who were all instrumental in the success of the event – thank you all so much!

March 11, 2026 Meeting

This meeting involved much discussion about upcoming events and the LL contributions to these. Discussion regarding organizing Pi(e) Day on March 14 included how to advertise, who was making pies, and how to arrange HQ. Isaiah Harris attended this meeting since he is the chairperson of the CCD fundraising committee and has coordinated the plans and volunteers.

Other events that were talked about included the March 28 - No Kings Day Rally, the March 28 - Bags to Riches - Safe House fundraiser- 5:30 at PSU. Ruth M. described the importance of the March 31 - 5:30 - 7:00 Local Impact: Get the Facts: Hunger in Kansas and Pittsburg, at Homer Cole and the April 28 - 5:30 - 7:00 Local Impact: Get the Facts: Education Funding and Our Local Schools at Homer Cole, Pittsburg, KS.

Those who attended Washington Days on March 6 to 8 shared information about the candidates who were involved in the district meetings and the state representative and state senate candidate forums.

March 25, 2026 Meeting

Some LL may report that this meeting was both energizing for the rally and hilarious, but then again, that’s a common feature when LL gather for the Wednesday meetings every other week. Delma T. suggested that we listen to the music and song, Do You Hear the People Sing? from Les Misérables and consider playing it for the rally. Then Delma read her poem that she wrote for the rally. This inspired and invigorated us for discussion about our rally plans. With that, several creative ideas emerged for signs and apparel.

Ruth M. discussed the food drive that is scheduled for March 31 at the Homer Cole and the importance of getting the word out about ways to contribute.

Several LL lamented about the recent tragedies happening in the Iran War and our outrage and fears about the escalation of this ill-conceived war.

For some comic relief, I suggested we listen to Paula Poundstone’s daily challenging messages to Donald Trump. This added some hilarity even though she points out disturbing actions perpetrated by Trump. Then with supportive and affirming messages, the meeting adjourned. The next meeting will be on April 8 at 12noon.

Colin McRoberts was the guest of the monthly meeting of the Kansas Chapter of Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) on March 11. Dr. McRoberts, a professor of Business Law and Negotiation at KU, attended the town hall promoted by Senator Roger Marshall, at which Senator Marshall abruptly left when the audience challenged Marshall’s lack of involvement with actual Kansans. This experience inspired McRoberts run in the CD1 Democratic primary to oppose Republican incumbent Tracey Mann. CD1 is a fascinating display of Republican political chicanery. In terms of area, it is about 2/3 of the state. It includes much of western and southwestern Kansas and the border is a line diagonally from the southwest to the northeastern part of Kansas. Liberal Lawrence and Manhattan are paired with rural areas that have been Republican strongholds. The number of counties to visit and the long travel times make campaigning a test of physical endurance, as well as strategic planning.

Mc Roberts noted in his remarks that previous campaigns have created networks of campaign workers who seem to have evaporated when the campaigns failed. One of his hopes is to establish a network of campaign workers who remain committed to building a Democratic base for local, state, and national elections. The “Democratic” designation of party affiliation seems to be associated with urban priorities of the elite while disregarding the struggles of rural, agrarian, and working-class citizens.

Some of McRobert’s priorities include investing in education in rural areas, because, as schools go, so goes the population; rebalancing federal benefits to include a greater emphasis on rehabbing housing; farm aid that helps local farmers, rather than corporate farms; and 4 year university in western Kansas and regional trade schools. McRoberts was appalled at the cancellation of USAID programs. It hurt farmers, populations in need of food assistance, medical programs, and positive relationships with foreign governments.

During the Q and A time, McRoberts expressed support for reducing the number of military bases that are spread around the world; affirmed support for Israel’s right to exist, but curtailment of weapons used to pursue genocide of the Palestinian population and monitoring how weapons are used in general.

Colin Mc Roberts came across as a thoughtful, articulate candidate willing to listen and engage with anyone curious about what he believes and hopes to accomplish. He hopes to make a lasting contribution to creating an enduring group of Democrats committed to electing representatives who truly represent all of their constituents.

Our next guest for our meeting on April 8th is Sarah Prue, who is primarying Sharice Davids, our lone Democratic Representative from Kansas CD3. Some say, “Leave well enough alone”. Sarah Prue, says, in effect, “We can do better.” Go to Mobilize, virtual events near me, to sign up to attend this zoom meeting from the comfort of your home. This should be interesting.

Secretary’s Report

Welcome & Chair’s Remarks — Emily Walters

Chair Emily Walters opened meeting, noting the party just returned from Washington Days the previous week.

Washington Days Report:

• A nonbinding resolution was passed stating that the six elected KDP state officers and two national committee members may not endorse any candidate prior to a primary. This also applies to county parties regarding candidates in contested seats. While nonbinding, this could present challenges at the county level.

• The convention spanned three days, with Sunday dedicated to candidate forums. Attendees heard from candidates in contested national races and many state congressional contests.

Upcoming Election Cycle Infrastructure:

• April: Volunteer recruitment

• May: Canvassing begins

• June 1: Filing deadline for Precinct Captains

Headquarters Update — Sally Harryman

Headquarters is expected to move to expanded hours in early April. Anyone with time to volunteer is encouraged to contact Sally.

Action Meetings continue every Thursday at 4:00 PM. An additional Rally meeting was scheduled for immediately following today’s meeting.

Newsletter Update — Harriet Bachner

Harriet is seeking reports from various groups within the county party highlighting recent activities and initiatives. Submissions are due to Harriet or Phil by the 25th of each month.

Chair Emily Walters extended a special thanks to the newsletter team and to candidate Avery Rowland for her visible advocacy in response to the recent bathroom bill from the Kansas Legislature.

Deep Canvassing Training — Harriet Bachner

A full deep canvassing training is scheduled for Thursday, March 19th, 5:00–8:30 PM. The session includes a 30-minute potluck dinner break — attendees are asked to bring a dish to share.

Isaiah Harris added that this training is highly valuable even for those with basic canvassing experience and strongly encouraged attendance. Please contact Harriet by phone or email to RSVP.

Fundraising Committee — Isaiah Harris

Pi Day Fundraiser: Pi Day was a great success, raising $1,000 as of Saturday evening. Sincere thanks to all who contributed, volunteered, or purchased a pie.

Candidate Announcement: Isaiah Harris announced he is strongly considering running for Kansas House District 3 against Chuck Smith. He cited his research into current policies as motivation, expressing deep concern about the direction of representation for Kansas residents.

Young Democrats  - No Young Democrats were present. 

High School Democrats — Vivian Blakemore

Several students attended Washington Days. Many members are currently traveling or working through spring break and will resume full activities afterward.

Candidate Search Committee — Don Pyle & Lynette Babcock

The committee continues to seek a candidate for County Commissioner District 3, covering Pittsburg. Key details about the position:

• Paid position, approximately $40,000 annually

• Full Kansas state employee health benefits

• Two meetings per week at 10:00 AM, followed by department meetings

• Each district commissioner oversees their own road crew

• Additional optional committees available, typically meeting monthly

Special Guest — Anne Parelkar, Candidate for U.S. Senate

Anne Parelkar, candidate challenging Roger Marshall for U.S. Senate, addressed the group. She is an immigration attorney, a Daughter of the American Revolution, and married to an immigrant from Mumbai, India.

Anne shared her platform priorities: immigration advocacy, public education, campaign finance reform, term limits, and reducing the influence of large-dollar donors in politics — particularly since Citizens United.

She emphasized her belief that foreign adversaries, including Russia and China, have actively worked to divide Americans through misinformation, and that unity across political lines is essential to reclaiming the country’s future.
