I was a sheltered farm kid who had never knowingly been around it. I quickly learned that it wasn’t the “gateway drug” DARE had warned me about in the ’90s. I also began to realize how many nonviolent offenders were being locked away for what amounted to victimless crimes.

Back then, marijuana was almost always a low-quality product full of stems and seeds, compacted into a brick somewhere in Mexico. Occasionally, someone would get medical-grade marijuana from Colorado, which had legalized medical cannabis in 2000. Either way, you usually had to visit some questionable dude’s house and watch him play video games for 20 minutes before you could even talk business.

I quickly learned that the Devil’s lettuce, while certainly not healthy or productive to consume 24/7, definitely isn’t from the Devil. It’s a natural plant that has provided relief for people dealing with all sorts of aches and pains. Cannabis has been used medicinally for millennia across the globe.

In 2006, I visited Amsterdam and saw what a world with recreational marijuana looked like. I saw firsthand that it could be regulated, managed, and handled by law enforcement without turning society upside down. Drunk Brits on a stag weekend were a bigger problem than some travelers getting stoned in the park.

Over the last 50 years, breeders have taken plant genetics from varieties around the world and selectively developed specific traits. Just like corn, beans, and countless other crops, modern marijuana is the product of intentional breeding and genetics. Pretending it is still the same product that existed 50 years ago doesn’t reflect reality. And neither does pretending Kansas can somehow keep marijuana out.

In February 2023, Missouri celebrated its first recreational cannabis sale. Kansans quickly became regular customers in Joplin, Lamar, Nevada, and other communities along the border. Missouri businessmen understand what their customers want, and in November 2025, they opened a dispensary just 100 yards across the state line in Mindenmines, Missouri. Think about that for a moment.

Kansas consumers are crossing the border, spending their money in Missouri, and helping fund Missouri government programs with Kansas dollars. In 2025, Missouri collected $255 million in cannabis taxes. A significant portion of that money came from Kansans. That is money Kansas could be collecting instead.

Is weed today stronger than ever? Yes. Does it still support cartels? No. Have other states experienced problems and growing pains with legalization? Absolutely. But those are arguments for responsible regulation, not arguments for pretending the status quo is working.

The reality is that marijuana is already here in Kansas. Our current policy doesn’t stop Kansans from buying it or consuming it. It doesn’t eliminate the black market. And it certainly doesn’t stop Kansas tax dollars from leaving the state. What it does is leave Kansas without tax revenue, without the regulatory control, and without the opportunity to establish reasonable rules that protect consumers and communities.

We should learn from the mistakes other states have made, not repeat them. We should regulate marijuana, enforce reasonable standards, protect our children, keep impaired drivers off the road, and make sure the people who profit from this industry are contributing to the communities where they do business.

Most importantly, we should stop sending Kansas money across the state line. We also had a great time knocking doors in Opolis this month. Rural Kansans have been hit hard by the economic crisis affecting the working class in our country, and the people of Opolis are no exception. They, like the people of Pittsburg, are ready for bold, progressive leadership.

Our campaign is powered by people, not corporations. Our pressure forced the commission to vote down a terrible proposal from a mass surveillance company with ties to the Israeli military.

PDA Kansas invited Isaiah Harris, candidate for Kansas House District 3, and Avery Rowland, candidate for Kansas House District 2, to the Kansas Chapter’s monthly zoom meeting. Seventeen people were present at the meeting as Harris and Rowland discussed their campaigns, their approaches to campaigning, and the policies that they support.

Geography is one of Avery’s biggest challenges, as District 2 is relatively large, extending from the Kansas border to parts of Chanute, with sparsely populated rural areas, and relatively small towns. By contrast, District two is Pittsburg and rural areas close to Pittsburg. Isaiah has the benefit of volunteers who recently worked on his campaign for city commissioner and the recent primary, while Avery began building her volunteer group when she decided to run.

Both campaigns have approached voters with an attitude of curiosity about the issues that were most important to voters. Unsurprisingly, the unaffordability of the current economy affects Democrats, Republicans, and Undeclared voters alike. Kansas’s minimum wage of $7.25 an hour competes with Missouri’s minimum wage of $15.00 an hour. With gas at $3.83 and more a gallon, a day’s wages could buy 12 gallons of gas. One job at minimum wage doesn’t buy very much in terms of groceries, utilities, housing, and healthcare.

Healthcare is another major issue voters talk about. The Big, Bad, Ugly Republican Bill of last year removed subsidies that helped purchase health insurance and removed many people from Medicaid assistance, which takes effect after the midterm elections. Added to that are restrictions on who can receive SNAP benefits and reduced or no cost school meals, and children, the elderly, low income, and people with disabilities are suffering. Kansas Republican legislators continue to refuse to advance a bill that would bring in more Federal Medicaid money. People go without regular checkups, without dental care, without medications, and are forced to rely on Emergency room care with no follow-up.

Another voter concern that our candidates hear is lack of adequate funding for public schools in general, and special education programs in particular. Because much of school funding depends on local property taxes, homeowners are hit with higher property taxes and annually increased valuation of homes. No one has come up with a solution for the tax issues that will satisfy everyone, but relying on property taxes to cover increased costs from inflation has managed to alienate a large swath of homeowners.

An issue that Avery heard frequently from farmers and ranchers was the right to repair equipment they had purchased. My understanding of that idea is that equipment dealers will void warranties on equipment, like tractors and combines, if the owner tries to repair the equipment themselves. When planting or harvesting are happening and something breaks down, the speed of repair is critical. Taking something to the dealer or having technicians come to the equipment can be extremely expensive. Worse still, there could be an extended waiting time for when repairs could be handled by the equipment dealer, thus delaying planting or harvesting I grew up on a farm, as did Avery, and being able to do our own repairs was a necessity. As a footnote, including “the right to repair” was proposed as a plank in the Kansas Democratic Platform, but turned down by urbanites who thought it was unimportant.

Both of our candidates have enjoyed the conversations that have happened during their campaigning. We’ve assisted/tabled at several events, including the Crawford County Fair, the Pitt state community organization fair, a voter registration event at Pitt State back to school activity, and the Arma homecoming. Because of this, we were able to have a lot of great conversations with community members. I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered at these events. It isn’t easy in this hot and humid weather. On top of that, many members have been canvassing, primarily for Isaiah’s campaign, which is going splendidly.

The Pitt State Dems have officially taken off, as well, they had a presence at the campus organization fair, and had their first meeting, successfully gaining several members.

One note worth event was our typical monthly Wesley House volunteering. Sunday August 23 was incredibly busy, which shows the real need the community is facing as grocery prices continue to rise. It is of course amazing that this resource is available but deeply concerning that it is so needed. While we will be discussing this in greater detail, this concern will lead to us planning future efforts in this vein, as mutual aid becomes increasingly important.

Several members also attended Blue in Bloom, a fundraiser with the Kansas Young Democrats in Overland Park. This fundraiser was great success, with around $8,000 raised, which will be going to young candidates. The aim of the program is to bridge communication gaps between first responders and individuals with neurodivergence or other health and other communication-related conditions. It helps reduce stress, increase understanding, and support positive interactions during traffic stops with law enforcement officers or first responder encounters.

Gambel learned about this program at a professional law conference. After celebrating Kay Long's birthday the conversation focused on the unexpected news about the death of Dolly Parton was the topic of conversation. We focused on her accomplishments, talent, and contributions not only to music, film, and her encouragement of literacy by donating millions of books to children. A song was played in memory of her: I can see a clear blue morning. Just as the discussion shifted to her well-known role in the movie, 9 to 5 and her hit song from the movie, District 2 state candidate, Avery Rowland arrived with two guests from Paris, France.

These young women are visiting mid-America and exploring perspectives about the upcoming election and the issues that concern people. They are documentary film makers here to follow Avery Rowland on her campaign for the Kansas State Representatives, District 2. They are staying in Kansas City and will be in the U.S. until Election Day. We asked them a lot of questions about politics in France. They have more than two political parties. The President is elected for five years and can run for re-election. They think Macron may run for five more years again. It isn't legal and he is not well liked. Nazis are starting to have more power. This lively sharing of the political and social climate in both the USA and France revealed that there are many similar concerns, especially about issues such as immigration, right wing ideology, economy and racism. The LL delighted in meeting and speaking with Latita Clozel and Ariane Momseni and especially learning about how much we have in common across country, culture, and generations. Latita and Ariane then filmed the remainder of the meeting (they are creating a documentary) in which Marcia Weeks discussed the challenges regarding voter registration, mail in ballots, and ways that CCD can ensure that voters can cast their ballots. Marcia pointed out the HQ computer that is dedicated to voter registration and very simple to use. Folks can access ksvotes.org or the QR code to register or check voter registration. Theo combines kindness, love, and wisdom with very emotional retelling of past, at times traumatic, events by the central characters. As readers, we all felt like the story was “spot on” with the exigencies of our lives. Our group members compared Theo’s interactions with the people he met to that of a good therapist, especially the way he listened and conveyed genuine curiosity and care. Jim and Nancy Fredette listened to the audio version of the book and related that was an emotional experience to hear the depth of the character development. (I am told that the book is better than the movie by that name.) The author reports a long-term fascination with the story behind Shakespeare's most enigmatic play, Hamlet. Hamnet is a portrait of a marriage and the grief of the loss of a child. The couple have children, a daughter and then twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet dies at age 11 and 4 years later the father writes a play called Hamlet.

We are always open to recommendations.
