Of course, it is vital to discuss issues and policy in other ways, but it doesn’t need to be “here are our six or twenty most important issues and solutions.”

I want to thank Jack for helping to bring me to this epiphany. My own (borrowed) suggestion for a slogan (No Kings) violates the lessons of FDR, Truman, LBJ, and Obama, despite the fact that I believe the root cause of the horrors of the past 16 months is based on the Trump’s violations of the founding principles of our country in this year as we celebrate 250 years since our divorce from a Kingdom. The topics included how Kansas schools are funded, including Special Education and how budget challenges impact our schools. The mill levy was explained on a series of posters displayed on a wall.

J. B. Elliott, Superintendent of USD 250 spoke first. He said that the district lost 130 students during the 25-26 school year, resulting in a loss of funding as districts are paid a specific amount per pupil enrolled. As positions open, they will be filled from within by moving current staff. This may cause increased class sizes. Some positions will not be filled.

SEK Interlocal 637, which serves 13 school districts in Southeast Kansas is also facing budgetary problems. Greg Kubler explained that special education is to be funded 92% by the state. This level of funding has never been the case. Currently the state is only funding 65% of special education. Because these services are mandated, this means that each of the 13 districts will have to provide the difference, cutting even more into their budgets.

Mike Bruner from Champions for Schools spoke briefly. His most important message was about the amendment that will be on the August primary ballot regarding the appointment of state Supreme judges. Currently a committee of practicing attorneys comes up with three candidates they have vetted based on qualifications and merit and submits those names to the governor who then appoints one of the three to the court. The amendment would change this process to a popular vote, possibly leading to campaign funds and partisan politics playing a role in selecting judges who are not vetted and selected on qualifications and merit. Mr. Bruner encouraged us to vote no on the amendment.

As a retired elementary and special education teacher of 29 years in Pittsburg, it breaks my heart to learn of these budget and personnel concerns. We need qualified staff to teach all students. Without appropriate funding it is difficult to attract and retain such individuals.

— Nancy Tomassi

If you stop by Headquarters and find the office closed, I encourage you to see that as an opportunity to volunteer for a couple of hours. Even a small amount of time helps, and it’s a great way to stay informed and share information with others who may need it. Headquarters also sees a lot of use outside regular operating hours through meetings and community groups. There were only 6 in attendance but that doesn’t mean there was any lapse in conversation. We started with a great meal centered around what I would call a chicken and noodle casserole. Chicken and noodles are always a home run for me, but this casserole was more of a bases loaded event. A Tex-mex stew, salmon salad, tortilla chips, and Mike’s famous dump cake rounded out the delicious meal for hungry book groupies.

The book we discussed was The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The book covers the 3 day “Battle of Gettysburg” and the damages of war, as observed and told by the Senior officers in command on the field, from both sides. To me, this rises above “novel” because all the events really occurred just as portrayed in the book. The only “novel” part was the dialog which is largely lost to history.

However, in the forward of the book, Mr. Shaara admitted that the only liberty he took in the book was to tone down the piety of the men involved. Given the way we speak today, their language would be largely disbelieved.

These men were classmates at West Point. They were friends. Their wives were friends. The first part of the book deals with the tortured decisions these men had to make concerning which side they would support. That dilemma is being replayed today by young men and women making the same decisions.

The coverage of the actual battle is accurate therefore, in places hard to read. There are no real winners. When Pickett tells General Lee, “They’re gone”, we can feel his shock as well as his pain. We have similar issues that set off the Civil War: civil government vs. state government, racism, power struggles, and money. James Fredette pondered that the Civil War was our second struggle/war. Will we have a third?

This is an excellent book as Mike Sands says, “I’ve read it numerous times and always manage to give a copy away, which answers the question of why I don’t have a copy today

Linda Pratt suggested the book, Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt, a New York Times bestseller.
